Powerful Melody-Writing Secret
Why is writing a melody so hard sometimes?
It can be infuriating... no matter how much experience you have.
We talk about this a lot in our Primary Songwriting workshops.
It can be scary.
It can be intimidating.
It's even overwhelming at times.
Because writing a testimony song is a very vulnerable thing.
Especially if you've never written before.
And even when you do muster up enough courage to start writing...
The NEXT big fear is SHOWING it to someone.
Will they ridicule you?
Stomp on your ideas?
Laugh at you?
How can you crush the head of these fears?
Not too long ago, Musivangelists Club member Margie Christensen started using a method of getting the melody pump primed that worked really well for her.
In fact, it worked so well for her that many others in our workshops have started using it too.
And now, they call this technique...
"Doing a Margie."
So, I thought it was high time to bring Margie onto the YouTube channel for an interview about her songwriting journey.
She started as a total beginner.
Actually, she was rather fearful of starting, as you'll hear in the interview below.
But after being in workshop after workshop these past two years, she's turned into a really wonderful songwriter.
It's so fun for me to watch her and all of our workshop participants grow into the wonderful songwriters and composers they are.
In our chat we talked about several helpful things, including...
0:00 - The hardest part of writing a primary song.
2:17 - BYU organ workshop recommended she learn harmony.
6:46 - All her 10 children and 27 grandchildren sang her song.
9:08 - Songwriting made simpler with these 4 steps.
10:44 - The "Margie" melody-writing secret.
15:03 - The REAL definition of composition.
19:13 - Why Margies takes every live Primary Song workshop.
27:00 - How scripture helps Margie beat the blank page blues.
31:24 - Harmony method no theory class will teach you.
34:36 - How to get a free harmony class.
Margie is a fantastic example of overcoming these fears.
I hope her story will help you.
